The University was founded as the Stalingrad Medical Institute in
1935. In 1993, it got the status of an Academy and in 2003 was granted
the status of a University.
The university was among the first in Russia to provide educational
services to International students in 1962. English medium courses
are handled by professors having teaching experience in foreign universities
or having actively partcipated in exchange programs.
All the courses combine intensive training in the theory of medicine
with practical activities. Students from 113 countries in Asia, Latin
America, Africa and Europe have passed through the portals of the
university. Pre clinical courses are conducted in 4 main buildings
of the university while clinical courses are provided in 15 multiprofile
clinics with departments of srugery, cardiology, Traumatology, Opthalmology,
Obstetrics and Gynaecology equipped with the most up-to-date diagnostic
and treatment facilities. The Regional Cardiology Centre is one of
the best cardiological clinics in Russia.
There are 3 comfortable hostels including apartments with all modern
conveniences. A well stocked library supports the students with over
7,00,000 books in Russian, English, French, German, Arabian and other
languages. There is an internet centre within the library.
The university has built up relationshhips with
a number of foreign universities - the University of Arkanses for
Medical Sciences of USA, Albert Ludwigs Universitaet of Freiberg
Germany, Martin Luther Halle-wittenberg Universitaet of Germany
and many more from Belgium, France and Chine. It has been collaborating
with the World Federation for Medical Education, the WHO, UNESCO,
British Council, United Agency for International Development etc
and has participated in a wide range of joint international research
projects.
The university has 763 highly qualified teachers and instructors with
11 Academicians, 96 Professors and 401 Associate Professors among
them. Most of them have PhD's or more advanced qualifications.
The Volgograd State Medical University is an active participant of
a number of international projects promoting medical research and
clinical practice. This accounts for a genuine interest in the activities
of the University on the part of government officials of various countries.
It has recently been visited by the ambassadors of the USA, Malaysia,
India, the People's Republic of China, Brunei, Bangladesh, etc., and
top officials of Medical and Dental Councils of different countries.
The University has been collaborating with the World Federation
for Medical Education, with the World Health Organisation (WHO),
with UNESCO, with the British Council, with the United States Agency
for International Development, with the American International Health
Alliance, and participating in a wide range of joint international
research projects.
