Medical Council of India Regulations:

All aspects of medical education for Indian citizens are regulated by the Indian Medical Council Act 1956, which became a Statutory Law on 30/12/1956. Two very important amendments were made to the act, in the year 2002, to govern those Indian citizens who choose to study medicine in any instituion outsite India. These are the Eligibility requirement for taking admission in an undergraducate medical course in a Foreign Medicial Institution Regulations 2002, and the Screening test Regulations 2002.

Eligibility Requirment: According to this regulation, any student who chooses to study in any foreign medicial institution shall apply to and obtain an Eligibility Certificate from the Medical Council of India. The Eligibility Certificate is issued to only those candidates who satisfy the following criteria:

(i) The candidate shall be not less tha 17 years of age on or before 31st December of the year of admission to the course.

(ii) The candidate should have passed 2nd PUC / 12th Std / HSC exam with the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English individually, and have obtained a minium of 50% marks taken together (aggregate) in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (40% for SC / ST & OBC).

Screening Test: According to this regulation, any Indian citizen who has obtained a medical degree from any foreign medical institution shall have to quality a screening test conducted by the National Board of Examinations, Govt of India, before getting the Registration with the medical Council of India or any State medical Council. Further, no person shall be permitted to appear in the screening test unless:

(i) The Institution awarding the Medical Degree is on the approved list under the provisions of the Indian Medical Council act 1956.

(ii) The candidate has obtained "Eligibility Certificate" from the Medical Council of India as per the Eligibility requirement for taking admission in an undergraducate medical course in a Foreign Medical Institution regulations 2002.
