Kazan State Medical University |
Kazan State Medical University is a multi-functional and mutilevel
State Institution of higher learning in medicine. It is situated in
Kazan which is the Capital of the Tatarstan Republic, a city in central
European Russia which lies on the confluence of the Volgo and Kazanka
Rivers.
The university was founded in the year 1804 by a Royal Command from
Emperor Alexander I. It commenced as the Faculty of Medicine of
the Kazan University and was separated from the university in the
year 1930 to be named as the Kazan State Medical Institute. It was
given the status of a university in the year 1994.
Clinical training is provided to its students in the faculties of
Paediatrics, General Medicine and Dentistry through 54 medical institutions
comprising hospitals, maternity homes, special diagnostic centers,
out patient units and polyclinics, which among themselves have 8600
beds and 98 Dental Chairs. Pharmaceutical training is provided through
a system of 65 pharmacies in the Tatarstan Republic, 18 pharmacies
in Chyvachia and some commerical pharmaceutical units.
The Post Graduate faculty, which was started in the year 1994, admits
100 students every year in 35 different specialities. The training
includes work in class as well as independent work with patients
under the supervision of Doctors and Professors. The course also
includes the study of interdisciplinary subjects and electives,
the choice of which depends on the main specialization.
Surgical Departments of the university are the
leaders of Russian medicine in the field of laser surgery and endosurgery.
The Dental school of the university is well known for developing
new constructions of dentures, implants and orthopaedic materials.
The Regional Centre of Cardiovascular Surgery is one of the Departments
of the university. The Library of the university
has more than one million books of scientific and teaching literature.
It subscribes to 354 foreign and 254 Russian scientific medical
journals.
Members of the staff participate in the development of six international
programs. In the last five years, over 200 reports have been presented
at International conferences and symposiums. The university is developing
academic contacts with scientists in USA, Belgium, Germany, Italy,
Czech Republic and France. Professors from Yale University visit
Kazan State Medical University each year to give lectures on "Evidence
based Medicine".
Students of the university participate in different festivals and
have their own Newspaper "Kazan Medical Student:. The university
has two major periodical publications namely "Neurology Newsletter"
and "Kazan Medical Journal".
The climate in Kazan is temperate, with warm sunny summers and snowy
winters with mild frost. Students can participate in year round
recreation, including football, tennis, basketball and swimming
in summer, or skiing and skating in winter. During the holidays,
the students can relax in the camp ""Medic" in the
woods on the bank of the Volga River.
